From the different colored pages to the striped backgrounds, the calendar is both eye-catching and consistent. Most student organizations on campus have some sort of fundraiser, and this calendar is done annually by the Photography Club.
This calendar consists of images taken by alumni members of the club with many different students participating. Students submit the photos in the calendar which everyone in the club later votes on to decide their favorite photos. Each month of the calendar has a different student featured. Officers and club advisors are the ones who organize the photos based on the number of votes and place them by month.
“We try to include as many people as possible,” said Ms. Root, one of the club advisors. “We try and have 12 different people each year and so far we have been very successful.”
Then the photos and names are sent to Allegra, a company based in Bedford, N.H. The company creates the initial proof before it is sent back to be checked for design choices, photograph correctness, and photographers’ names. This outline is then returned to the printers and turned into the final copies in a fast process.
“It usually takes them a few days turnaround time to get them all printed, and then, that’s it, we have our calendar,” said Root.
When asked about the calendar’s impact, Hailey Mansur, one of the club’s alumni officers, said “We all submit different pictures. We get a view of our art styles, taking pictures, and then we can go over the pictures, talk about them, and then we get to vote on them… We’re all pretty nice to each other. We compliment each other’s pictures a lot.”
This specific fundraiser has been going on for at least 25 years at Pinkerton. It has followed the Photography Club through the different buildings the club has been held in, the old English and Social Studies wing in the Shepard Building, the Low Building, and now the Fine Arts wing in the English and Fine Arts Building.
“It started early on when the club first came to be,” said Root, “and it just grew from there every year. I can’t think of any year that we didn’t do it. Even during Covid, we did it.”
The calendar is also a great way for students to be published and to have their names exposed to the world.
“People are able to say that their picture is in a calendar,” said Mansur. “Even if it’s just for school, I still think it’s pretty cool. … It helps everyone be creative and be able to publish their pictures and art.”
These calendars went on sale at the end of November with pre-sale and continued through December. Each calendar costs $10. They are sold on campus by either a club member or the two club advisors, Ms. Root or Ms. Parenti. They are also being sold online this year through myschoolbucks.com.
All funds go towards the purchase of the calendars and the photography club’s goals or needs. Typically usages for the profit are benefits for the club, such as field trips or new equipment for the student participants.
